The School now includes Graduate School of Education, Applied Chinese Department, Applied English Department, Applied Japanese Department, Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Department, a total of 4 Departments and 5 Graduate Schools, along with the English Language Center that supports university-wide English Teaching.
The School is located on Taoyuan campus, which is not only a quiet environment full of fresh air, away from the noisy metropolis but also a vast space overlooking a plain and nestled against a mountain. For 2016-17, the full-time faculty members include 13 professors, 31 associate professors, 37 assistant professors, and 24 instructors; the part-time faculty members include 3 professors, 9 associate professors, 32 assistant professors, and 96 instructors. Overall, there are 2,600 students enrolled in the academic degree programs.
In line with the University’s educational philosophy of one key concept (attending to all students with parental care, support, and guidance) expressed three ways (excellence, professionalism, and internationalization), the School of Education and Applied Languages cultivates humanities professionals with international literary viewpoints and talents in Chinese, English, and Japanese languages.
In order to achieve the mission of the School, each Department and Graduate School plans their curriculum in accordance with their professional characteristics. The School has also established three Focused Course Programs for students, “Cross-cultural Communication”, “International Etiquette & Workplace Ethics” and “Overseas Training”. The courses in “Cross-cultural Communication” and “International Etiquette & Workplace Ethics” are taught by different faculty members from diverse departments to nurture students with broad worldviews and capacity.
The School of Education and Applied Languages evolved as an extension of the Business Documents Department and Language Center during the period when Ming Chuan was a junior women's commercial college. It became an independent School when Ming Chuan became a comprehensive university in August 1997. It was the earliest higher education entity aimed at applied language development in Taiwan to cultivate linguistic talents with fine academic and high moral character in conjuction with the needs of society and the current trends.
4. School Features
The following School features provide students an excellent learning environment.
- Diverse Applied Curriculum: The principle of the School curriculum design is to emphasize both theory and application, with consideration to both general and professional education. In addition, the curriculum also takes into consideration the real needs of those soon to graduate from the School of Applied Languages, so as to cultivate their capability for employment. Therefore, the curriculum of each department is quite different from traditional humanities programs, such as not only providing basic linguistic training but also daily life applications in business, tourism, and education so as to elevate the competitiveness of the graduates.
- Qualified, Passionate Faculty Members Deliver Diversified, Active Instruction: Most of our faculty members are not only equipped with doctorates and complete professional training, but also with the enthusiasm of attending to all students with parental care, support and guidance, which receives many compliments from students. Their teaching modes have evolved from quiescent to animated, such as using music to support their teaching of poems, classical poetry, and public performance of plays; or using slides and audiovisual aids to illustrate points; or taking students on field trips to conduct investigations, or service-learning during holidays or weekends from which a report is composed so as to train students’ observation and thinking, as well as to nurture their professional ability and care for the society.
- Good Teaching Facilities: All classrooms at MCU are equipped with the most advanced teaching facilities. In addition, each department has their own professional classrooms such as Translation and Oral Interpretation Classroom, A/V Classroom, American Culture Center, Chinese Culture Center, and Japanese Culture Center. Our culture centers were the first to offer situational teaching in Taiwan. Thus, they have become key points of interest for visitors to Ming Chuan and have received many accolades from honored guests, faculty and staff members, and students.
3. Significant International Exchange: In learning foreign languages, students may benefit much if they have the opportunity to visit the target country and experience the culture. Therefore, the Applied English Department, Applied Japanese Department and Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Department arrange for their students to exchange, visit and take internships among our sister schools in places such as Japan, England and the U.S. The Applied English Department and Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Department hold Learning Away From Home Program at Saginaw Valley State University in the U.S.A. every year, where they practice teaching Chinese. In 2015-16, 56 students from the Applied Japanese Department, 67 students from the Applied English Department, 36 students from the Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Department and 45 students from the Graduate School of Education participated in overseas internships.
